Jeff is also a Jujitsu instructor and holds the rank of Sandan, or 3rd Degree Black belt
Jeff Wynn is a research geophysicist by education; he holds an MS in high-pressure solid-state physics from the University of Illinois, and a PhD from the University of Arizona. He has worked for several companies in private industry including Phelps-Dodge Corp., AMAX Exploration, and Zonge Engineering, and currently serves as Team Chief Scientist for Volcano Hazards with the US Geological Survey, based in Vancouver, WA. In addition to conducting research in applied geophysical methods (electrical, electromagnetic, gravity and magnetic, seismic, borehole, and remote sensing methods applied to archeology, mineral resource investigations, environmental studies, offshore industrial minerals, and water resource mapping), he has served in several rotational management positions, including Associate Chief and Acting Chief (Office of Geochemistry and Geophysics), Deputy Chief of Mission (USGS-Saudi Arabia) and Chief of Mission ("Jefe del Grupo Asesor", in Venezuela). Jeff has published over 220 maps, papers, books, and reports in such diverse media as UNESCO Heavy Crude and Tarsands Volume, the Journal of Field Archeology, Sky & Telescope Magazine, and Scientific American. He has appeared on BBC World Service, BBC Horizon TV, Brazil Science TV, and on October 7, 2001 appeared on the BBC-Discovery episode "Hyperspace - Survival" on The Learning Channel.
Jeff has had a number of unusual experiences, including working in wilderness areas of Alaska, in the deep Amazonas Forest of southern Venezuela (he is the first author of the most recent geologic map of the southern half of Venezuela), and crossing the Empty Quarter of Saudi Arabia three times. An article he wrote on a visit to the Wabar meteorite impact site was published in Scientific American Magazine. He has also worked in Jordan, Greece, Thailand, and Mauritania - he has visited 31 different countries in all. He is fluent in Spanish, and can communicate in French and Arabic. In November 1999 the International Astronomical Union name an asteroid after him: "9564 Jeffwynn". This object is a member of the the Phocaea Group, between 5 and 12 km in diameter (depending on albedo), and crossed inside the orbit of Mars in October 2001. Jeff was awarded two patents on marine induced polarization by the US Patent Office in July 2001. This is an application of an advanced electrical geophysical technology to map the sub-seafloor for placer minerals, UXO (unexploded ordnance), long-buried shipwrecks, and androgenic changes to sensitive Sounds and Bays.Jeff also served as President of the Environmental & Engineering Geophysical Society (http://www.eegs.org/) for the years 2002-2003.
Jeff has also taught Self-Defense at the Reston, Virginia, YMCA and free women's self-defense clinics at the Vancouver, WA, YWCA and at local churches.
